Considered the masterpiece of earlier American Black Humor novel, Miss Lonelyhearts didn’t become a cynosure of contemporaneous critics but bring a far-reaching consequence for succeeding Black Humor writers. West utilized the Black Humor writing technique to portray loads of vivid characters, which tartly exposed the morbidity and absurdity of American society in 1930s. This thesis is intended to analyze the application of Black Humor in characterization. From this analysis, the author came to realize that the application of Black Humor has a close relationship with West’s own writing style. The result of the analysis indicates that Miss Lonelyhearts skillful used the Black Humor writing technique in portrayal of characterization, helped readers to be fully aware of the absurd society that the early American Black Humor novels criticized.
