ConsideredbymanytobethefounderofmodernChineseliterature,hewroteinbaihua(白话)(thevernacular)aswellasclassicalChinese.LuXunwasashortstorywriter,editor,translator,critic,essayistandpoet.Inthe1930shebecamethetitularheadoftheChineseLeagueofLeft-WingWritersinShanghai.LuXun'sworksexertedaverysubstantialinfluenceaftertheMayFourthMovementtosuchapointthathewaslionizedbytheCommunistregimeafter1949.MaoZedonghimselfwasalifelongadmirerofLuXun'sworks.ThoughsympathetictotheidealsoftheLeft,LuXunneveractuallyjoinedtheChineseCommunistParty.LuXun'sworksareknowntoEnglishreadersthroughnumeroustranslations,especiallySelectedStoriesofLuHsuntranslatedbyYangHsien-yiandGladysYang.hasbeenconsideredoneofthemostinfluentialChinesewritersofthe20thcenturyandthefounderofmodernbaihua(白话baihua),orvernacular,literature.Highlyinfluentialin20thcenturyChinesehistory,hisliteraryworksexertedasubstantialinfluenceaftertheMayFourthMovement.Hewasalsoanotedtranslator.LuXun,termed"chiefcommanderofChina'smodernculturalrevolution"bytranslatorsXianyiandGladysYang,istypicallyregardedasthemostinfluentialChinesewriterwhowasassociatedwiththeMayFourthMovement.HeproducedharshcriticismofsocialproblemsinChina,particularlyinhisanalysisofthe"Chinesenationalcharacter."Hehasoftenbeenconsideredtohavehadleftistleanings.Calledbysomea"championofcommonhumanity,"hehelpedbringmanyfellowwriterstosupportcommunistthought,thoughhenevertookthestepofactuallyjoiningtheCommunistParty.LuXunwasthepennameofZhouShuren(September25,1881—October19,1936)isoneofthemajorChinesewritersofthe20thcentury.Hebornin1881inafamilywithadeepConfucianbackground.Owingtothedeclineofhisfamilyfortunes,LuXun'schildhoodwasfilledwithhardship.In1904,hewenttoSendai,inJapan,tostudymedicine,buthesoonrealizedthatChinaneededfarmore"spiritualmedicine”,thantreatmentforphysicalills.Therefore,hereturnedtoTokyoin1906,anddecidedtogiveupstudyingmedicineanddevotehimselftoeducationandliterature.LuXunhasbeenconsideredasChina'sgreatestmodernwriterduringthe20thcentury.Chair...
